Ride out of Kathmandu's traffic and into the pine-covered hills of Kakani on this 2-day, 1-night motorbike escape. Stop for lunch by a trout farm, cool off at Fungfung Jharna waterfall, and spend the night in the hills with Ganesh Himal, Langtang, and Manaslu on the horizon at sunset and sunrise, before an easy ride back to the city.
Kakani sits around 2,030 metres, roughly 30 kilometres northwest of Kathmandu, and is one of the closest genuine mountain-air escapes from the capital. This 2D1N version of the ride stretches the usual single-day loop into an overnight trip, so instead of rushing back to Thamel by evening, you get a sunset and a sunrise from the hills, and a proper night away from the city.
Kakani Forest & Waterfall Motorbike Adventure - Highlights and Experience
The riding here is easy and relaxed — a mix of smooth highway out of the valley and winding hill roads through pine forest and terraced farmland. This tour is built for riders who want a short, scenic break rather than a demanding expedition.
A popular lunch stop on the way up, set beside farmed trout ponds with fresh mountain air and easy photo opportunities.
A hidden waterfall tucked into the forest, cool and quiet, with space to relax by the water or take a swim before continuing on.
On a clear day, Kakani's ridge offers views across to Ganesh Himal, Langtang, and Manaslu — one of the more accessible Himalayan panoramas near Kathmandu, best seen at sunset or sunrise.
The ride up to Kakani winds through lush pine forest and small hill villages, a cool contrast to the Kathmandu Valley below.
This is an easy ride suited to riders of all experience levels who hold a valid driving license. The route mixes smooth highway with light hill roads and short off-road stretches near the waterfall — no technical off-road experience is required, and riding days are short.
If you want real mountain air, a forest waterfall, and a Himalayan sunset and sunrise without a long expedition, this ride is for you.
Kakani lies outside any restricted or conservation-permit area, so no special permits are required. A valid driving license (international or Nepali) is required to ride.
This short ride works for most of the year. The best conditions are:

Monsoon months (June–September) bring green forest scenery but cloudier mountain views.
This ride is about forest, water, and mountain views rather than cultural sites, making it a good change of pace from Nepal's temple-and-monastery routes.
